How to Make a Living Working as a Registered Childminder
It is possible for UK citizens to make a living working as a registered childminder, although the set up process is more involved than it was several years ago. It is a useful business idea for those who have been made redundant, have children or just want a change of career path. This isn't just a way to make extra cash, thousands of people already make a full-time income by providing childcare services.
What Does a Registered Childminder do?
Those wondering how to make a living in childcare provision will need to satisfy various legal requirements before proceeding. It will be necessary to undergo a Criminal Record Bureau Check and to have your home assessed by Ofsted. These checks were introduced to ensure that both you and your home are suitable for the care of young children.
You are legally able to care for up to 6 children at any one time; this includes up to three 5 year olds and three 5 to 8 year olds. All children must be kept warm, safe and well-fed. Some children may have a specific dietary requirement (such as a gluten-free diet) that you need to be aware of. You will also need to find ways to keep the children in your care entertained with both indoor and outdoor play activities.
Registered Childminder Requirements
Age. Whilst there are no educational requirements, you must be over the age of 18.
Criminal Record Bureau checks. A CRB check will be performed on each adult who is over 16 that lives at your address.
Oftsed inspection. Ofsted will inspect your home to check that it meets the necessary requirements for the care of young children.
Education and training. Registered childminder and first-aid courses should be taken to deal with both every-day and emergency situations.
Local authority registration. The majority of local authorities will offer grants and financial assistance to help you make a living.
Make a Living, But How Much?
How much you make is completely down to you. It could simply be a source of extra cash or it could even provide a full-time income. Those who wish to work on a full-time basis can earn upwards of £16,000 per annum. Don't forget that you are self-employed and will be able to offset legitimate business expenses against your taxes.
Working as a registered childminder is an excellent way to make a living for those who are seeking a change or a way back into work. Check with your local authority as they usually offer both advisory and financial assistance to all new business start-ups.
