Proper Academic Planning Picking a major is a huge decision for any college student, but do you also realize picking a major could be a great way to avoid student debt? By selecting the proper course of study before college even begins, you can be on the right track to not only academic success, but financial success. By taking fewer classes you'll be saving more money. One of the major contributors to student debt is caused by enrolling in all the wrong classes. Why spend money on a class you know you don't need? Formulate an academic plan and save money in the process. If you enjoy a certain subject and want to pursue your academic dream and career, then make it happen! Planning and structure are two major keys to avoid student debt. Advanced Placement Courses (AP) If you're still in high school you have other options. Do you excel academically? Are you very studious and eager to learn? By enrolling in selected advanced placement classes (AP), you can not only grow academically, but here again, save money for the future. Many AP classes are considered basic equivalent courses to lower entry college courses. If you take a course in high school which provides college credit, that will be one less class you'll have to take and pay for in college. Yet another way to expand your mind, while not expanding your wallet, is to avoid student debt by hitting those books. You don’t have to be a genius, but it pays to be dedicated and hardworking. College Level Examination Program (CLEP) Would you like to take a test and pass a college course at the same time? Well, it can happen thanks to CLEP, also known as the College Level Examination Program. Just like AP classes, many colleges will accept CLEP tests as college credit. If you want to avoid some of the basic core classes required of a college freshman or sophomore, then take a CLEP test. By having to enroll in one less college course, you save money.
